How to Build Community is the title of a poster I've seen in a variety of places. It lists dozens of suggestions that would enrich any person's life and at the same time encourage common ground among neighbors. Among the many I admire and adhere to, some favorites are:
Turn off your TV
Greet people
Use the library
Share what you have
Start a tradition
Sing together

With every festival, coffeehouse or house concert, I experience a strong sense of community. Together the audience and performer use words, notes and a collective imagination to carry us to that place. It can occur at home, on the block, in a house of worship, around the campfire. Almost any song will do; give it a try; build community starting right at home.

"We are the words; we are the music. We are the thing itself."
- Virginia Woolf
