JOY OF SINGING TOGETHER - On Groundhog Day I came out of hibernation and had a concert with Ed Lowman in Saratoga. The singing from the audience was remarkable! From the very first song, their willingness to participate let them experience the physical and emotional bond that comes with making music together. We bounced from old a cappella songs to new ones with easy choruses and ended with the old favorite, Alice ("We can still sing along . . ."). There was even another alum from the Minerva Community Chorus - Esther Badgley and her daughters Laurien and Gerene added their beautiful harmonies to the evening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiHHVxPBVTM
LAKE ERIE RESCUE - Thirty-five years ago on January 26th a rescue took place in the waters of Lake Erie near Dunkirk, NY. All day and into the night, people risked their lives searching for two teenagers who had gone fishing on a warm morning, only to be trapped out on the lake by ice, increasing winds and dropping temperatures. Late that night, all got home safe and sound. Dick Gilman wrote a great poem about the event and asked me to put it to music. Then together with his wife Carmen, we sang this ballad at a Lake Erie Heroic Association banquet, were asked to record it, and a thousand 45 rpm discs were made and distributed. I've relocated the record (and a turntable!) and here's the Lake Erie Rescue. The three of us, later joined by neighbor Steve Warner, became the Newton Street Irregulars. http://www.berggrenfolk.com/albums_details.cfm?aid=47
