From the Songwriting File - I keep lots of journals and folders jammed full of scraps of paper: ideas for songs, a few lyrics on a theme, overheard phrases. Once in a restaurant, my wife and I watched a woman with her four daughters sit at the table next to us then heard the youngest say: "Mommy likes Daddy today." I jotted it down on the spot. Several years later I was leading a songwriting workshop in Maine and shared that quote with the students. Every one of them had his or her own interpretation or speculation. The next day one of them came back with a wonderfully touching song about the ups and downs of marriage as seen through the eyes of a child, each verse ending with the line: "Mommy likes Daddy today."
During the winter months I sift through my mountain of paper scraps, mining it for nuggets of inspiration. Today I uncovered the following poem:
Open your ears to the world that surrounds you
Listen, each moment's a poem
Open your mind and your bound to find
Ways to take care of our home
Open your heart to all those around you
You know we all breathe the same air
Open your spirit to this living planet
This is the home we all share
I wrote that in 1985 after Pete Seeger had said to me: "There are five billion people on this earth who breathe the same air we do [seven billion now!]." Fourteen years later the poem resurfaced and served as inspiration when I was wondering what to do with a list of examples about being quiet. The unsung lyrics got condensed and turned into the bridge of "Be Still" which is on the One with the Water album.
Also from the File - The 112 year old song Short'nin' Bread prompted some new lyrics. You can hear The Bread Song, and several other pieces of mine, on Soundcloud -http://soundcloud.com/berggrenfolk
