OCTOBER HARMONY WITH FINEST KIND - Ian Robb, Ann Downey and Shelley Posen are three singers from Ottawa whose harmony is "tighter than putty to a window pane" as a friend of mine likes to say. And they're my favorite folk group. I wanted to present them in a house concert but realized that all the people who'd want to hear them wouldn't fit in my house. So, thanks to my friend Joe Bruchac, it's the Finest Kind at the Ndakinna Education Center:
Sunday, October 14 @ 3 o'clock
Advance tickets are $15, and $18 at the door
A check can be sent & made out to:
Ndakinna Education Center
23 Middle Grove Road
Greenfield Center, NY 12833
Hope to see you there.
SHORT HISTORY OF A BANJO TUNE - Seventeen years ago I heard a story in Bulgaria about a village so poor, no one could afford musical instruments. When they wanted to dance they did it in their sock-feet so they could hear the music from the neighboring town. I made up a tune on the fretless banjo but placed the scene in Pinch Gut, a nickname for Leonardsville, the part of town where I grew up. I'd been told by old-timers that Mr. Leonard, who ran the logging operation on Trout Brook, didn't his pay or feed his men well enough, so they were always cinching their belts tighter, pinching their gut. I imagined the folks of Pinch Gut listening hard for distant music from Schroon Lake or North Creek any time they wanted to dance. You'll find the tune at Bits & Pieces 14 on the Albums page of the website. http://www.berggrenfolk.com/albums_details.cfm?aid=46
